Kimberly-Clark Design Project

For my ENGR131 class, my group designed a trash can system that will separate paper towels from other trash. My primary contributions were in the prototyping and testing process.

Given the balance mechanism from my teammate, I created a foam core housing and added a bucket so the prototype could be tested

For our chute deign, I also built the housing out of foam core.

This was our sifter design, made out of paper and cardboard.

I developed a test to measure the mechanical reliability of all three prototypes as well as a thought experiment to test the contamination rate of Prototype 3. I wrote out a detailed and clear procedure that could easily be followed by anyone who was asked to collect data.

I designed a thought experiment to determine the theoretical contamination rate of each design. I used Excel to do my calculations and present graphs with my findings.

Our results indicated that Prototype 3 had the highest recovery rate, lowest contamination rate, and it's mechanical reliability could easily be increased by making the bins larger. We decided on a final design and I used SketchUp to create a digital model.
